What is Satellite Broadband?

Satellite broadband is a type of internet connection that uses communication satellites to provide internet access to users. Instead of using traditional infrastructure like cables or phone lines, satellite broadband relies on satellites in geostationary orbit or low Earth orbit to transmit data between the user's dish antenna and the satellite. This technology is particularly useful in areas where traditional high-speed internet options like DSL or cable internet are not available. It allows users in remote or rural locations to access the internet with relatively high speeds.

Several companies provide satellite broadband services, including:

  1. Viasat: Viasat offers satellite internet service in the United States and other regions. They provide both residential and business satellite internet plans.

  2. HughesNet: HughesNet is another major provider of satellite internet services in the United States, offering high-speed internet plans for both residential and commercial customers.

  3. Starlink: Starlink is a satellite internet constellation project developed by SpaceX, aiming to provide high-speed internet access globally. It is still in the process of deploying satellites but has started offering beta services in certain areas.

  4. Inmarsat: Inmarsat provides satellite communication services, including broadband internet access, to users in various industries, such as maritime, aviation, and government sectors.

These are just a few examples of companies that offer satellite broadband services, and the options may vary depending on the region.

Starlink (Think Elon Musk and SpaceX) is more mature now with excellent UK coverage. You can expect download speeds in excess of 100Mbps with uploads of about 20Mbps and a latency of 25msec. The current “domestic” router provides dual band Wi-Fi but has no ethernet port so you would need an Ethernet adaptor. There are also many options for wall mounting of the satellite dish.

If you live in a deprived broadband area where FTTP hasn’t got to you, then this is a good option. It is quite expensive at £450 for the basic equipment and then £75/month on a rolling contract. We have installed numerous Starlink systems so please get in touch if you would like some advice or a free survey.
